Our research interests in the field of cluster chemistry and cluster physics is focused on the properties which do not scale going from the atom towards the bulk. The studies involve metallic, bimetallic, metallic-ionic, semiconducting and transition metal clusters. We succeeded to show that desired chemical and physical properties can be obtained by appropriate choice of the cluster size, structure and temperature. This is valid for reactivity, for optical properties (stationary and time dependent) as well as for the laser controlled reactions on the femtosecond time scale. These findings have initiated experiments which confirmed that an addition of a single atom to a cluster (each atom counts) can involve novel properties which are missed when extrapolated from larger to smaller systems. The search for such new properties is used now for designing nanostructured materials. The projects require developments of methods and concepts. |
