Photoswitching Homoaromaticity

Homoaromatic compounds possess an interrupted π system but display aromatic properties due to through-space interactions. Stable neutral homoaromatic hydrocarbons have remained rare and are typically unstable. The collaborative teams of Prof. Johannes Teichert (TU Chemnitz) and Dr. Oliver Dumele (HUB) present the preparation of a stable neutral homoaromatic molecule that can photoswitch through a reversible photochemical [1,11] sigmatropic rearrangement. Thereby, the nature of the homoaromatic state changes from a local 6π homoaromatic state to a global 10π homoaromatic state. It provides new insights for the design of new responsive molecular materials.
