Prof. Dr. Dietrich VolmerBioanalytical ChemistryResearchOur interdisciplinary research programme focuses on biological mass spectrometry, separation techniques and instrument development. The team applies innovative instrumental developments to research in metabolomics and lipidomics, with particular emphasis on measuring indicators or biomarkers of disease and nutritional status. Examples include highly automated methods for qualitative and quantitative measurement of low molecular weight endogenous metabolites and metabolic fingerprints, chemical labeling techniques for metabolite profiling and clinical studies (e.g. vitamin D metabolism). We also develop novel ionization methods and study the ion/molecule chemistry of gas phase protomers or macromolecules and their interactions with small ligands. Finally, the group specializes on the analysis of very complex samples using high resolution mass spectrometry.Selected recent publicationsRzagalinski I, Hainz N, Meier C, Tschernig T, Volmer DA, MALDI Mass Spectral Imaging of Bile Acids Observed as Deprotonated Molecules and Proton-Bound Dimers from Mouse Liver Sections.
