Combined-Bachelor of Science (Chemistry) with reference to teacher training

"Chemistry teacher (Xe'miztri  ti´tscha:), noun: Like a normal teacher, just cooler."

At Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, the studies of chemistry for teaching are organized in independent courses. This way, the special situation of the students can be considered in terms of time and subject-specific depth. In principle, it is also possible to combine chemistry with any other teaching discipline. It should be borne in mind, however, that with two experimental subjects (keyword "laboratory capacities") or with subjects at different locations (keyword "centre/campus north") implementation becomes a little bit more difficult. The Institute of Chemistry offers an ideal course of study, which provides for a start in the winter term. Lectures, seminars and lab work provide specialist content and practical work in the typical sub-areas of chemistry. For students with chemistry as their first subject, two additional modules will be added from the fifth semester onwards.

Still, the study program for teachers goes one step further: One of the requirements for prospective - cool - chemistry teachers is not only to have the self-evident specialist knowledge, but also to be able to convey it in an exciting and interesting way! To this end, the institute already offers courses in the bachelor's degree program that show where in life children and adolescents meet chemistry (keyword "everyday chemistry") and how phenomena can be explained (keyword "education"). This way, the foundations in chemistry education and learning psychology are laid and first experiences in the design of teaching/learning sequences are acquired. The interweaving of chemistry and talking about chemistry takes place. The bachelor's program concludes with a professional thesis in the subject area with the Bachelor of Science. The Institute of Chemistry also offers appropriate courses for the subsequent degree Master of Education. However, a new application must be submitted for this course of study.

Essentials
  • The Institute of Chemistry offers a structured course of study, which provides for a start in the winter term and enables a degree in the scheduled standard period of study.
  • The courses offered by the institute are aimed at students of the chemistry teaching profession with a focus on grammar school as well as students of the primary school teaching profession with natural sciences as an optional subject.
  • The completion of the bachelor's degree program permits a transition to the Master of Education program, which focuses on didactic content and research topics as well as a practical semester at schools.
