Installing a DNA barcode on surface receptors for live cell imaging in erasable colours
In a Nature Chemistry paper, the Seitz group describes a method for labelling membrane proteins with the biostable DNA-analogue, peptide nucleic acid (PNA). The PNA tag enables fluorescence imaging of cell surface receptors via hybridization with dye-labelled DNA. Strand displacement reactions allow removal and exchange of colours.
